DescriptionThe current full-scale experiment was built by FHWA in 2007. It contains five different test lanes with the same pavement structure and materials, varying only the compaction level of the asphalt concrete layer. The purpose is to evaluate the impact on rutting and cracking performance of different levels of compaction obtained during construction (field density). All lanes consist of 100 mm (4 inches) of asphalt concrete (same mixture), over 560 mm (22 inches) of unbound aggregate base, over the existing subgrade. Each lane is produced on a continuous rolling bed in a hot-mix plant. The compaction process in the plant includes different steps. The first step is to mix the binder with 20 percent recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) (dry basis). The second step is to mix the binder with 40 percent RAP (dry basis). The third step is to mix the binder with 60 percent RAP (dry basis).
DescriptionThe current full-scale experiment was built by FHWA in 2012. It contains six different test lanes with different asphalt pavement temperatures. The purpose is to evaluate the impact on rutting and cracking performance of asphalt pavement temperature and the difference between the new and the current hot-mix plant. The temperature data will be collected automatically by the installed thermocouples. 7211a4ac4a
